After being found guilty of multiple acts of genocide during a trial by the Green Lantern Corps membership, he was executed. However, Sinestro managed to cheat death by sending his essence into the Central Power Battery and shutting it down from within. While trapped inside, he discovered that the ancient weakness of the Green Lanterns' light to the color yellow was actually caused by Parallax, the embodiment of fear. Later, when Hal Jordan entered the Battery to restore the powers of his fellow Lanterns, he defeated Sinestro's spirit, condemning him to remain trapped inside powerless for eternity. During the Mosaic era, while John Stewart was on Oa, the spirit of Sinestro was absorbed into Stewart's power ring during the reactivation of the Central Power Battery, allowing Sinestro to torture and subjugate Stewart's consciousness until he fled after a confrontation involving Rose Hardin and her son, Toby.

In Their Own Story

The history of the Central Power Battery includes dramatic moments of betrayal and escape. In one instance, Sinestro anticipated his imprisonment in a new prison empowered by the rings of hundreds of Lanterns designed to prevent him from draining power. He escaped using a backup yellow ring hidden in his boot. Decades later, after Hal Jordan was possessed by Parallax and wiped out most of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians freed Sinestro from the Central Power Battery as a last-ditch effort to stop Jordan's rampage. Following a battle where Jordan snapped Sinestro's neck, he was revealed to have survived when Kyle Rayner discovered Parallax's existence. Sinestro later masterminded the death of Kyle Rayner's mother by having Despotellis infect her, aiming to break Rayner's will and make him Parallax's latest host.
