Lore & Background

The concept of the Green Lantern began with Alan Scott, who first appeared in All-American Comics #16 on July 14, 1940. Creator Martin Nodell cited Richard Wagner's opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung and a trainman's green railway lantern as inspirations for his magical ring and lantern. Scott's ring was powered by the Green Flame, contained within an alien orb forged by a lampmaker named Chang. Later writers revised this origin to be a fragment of the Starheart. In 1959, editor Julius Schwartz reinvented the character for the superhero revival era as Hal Jordan, shifting from a lone Earth vigilante to one of many interstellar lawmen. The first mention of this new group occurred in Showcase #22 (1959) when a dying Green Lantern passed his ring to Hal Jordan. Over the years, writers have introduced a large cast of Lanterns in both supporting and starring roles.

In Their Own Story

The power rings are considered one of the most powerful weapons in the DC Universe, capable of generating solid energy constructs modeled into any shape desired by the user's will. They also create protective force fields enabling flight and survival in space. However, these rings have limitations: they possess a limited charge requiring periodic recharging and can be drained or had their energy absorbed against the wearer's will. Originally, they could not affect yellow objects due to a design flaw, though Gerard Jones later revealed the Guardians could change this at will. In Green Lantern: Rebirth, the 'yellow impurity' was explained as fear entity Parallax imprisoned in the Central Power Battery. A significant limitation is that only those with exceptional willpower can use them. Originally programmed to prevent killing sentient beings, this restriction was rescinded by the Guardians first to combat the Sinestro Corps and later for general duty execution.

Reader's Guide

All power rings require periodic recharging, often accompanied by an oath recited to reaffirm commitment to the Corps, though not strictly required for the charge. While many create their own oaths, most use the official one as a sign of respect. The universe is divided into 3600 sectors, each patrolled by a Green Lantern. In the late 2000s, writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver expanded the concept to a spectrum of colors and emotions following the 'Sinestro Corps War' and 'Blackest Night'. This introduced rings for red (rage), orange (greed), yellow (fear), green (willpower), blue (hope), indigo (compassion), pink (love), black (death), and white (life). Sinestro had possessed a yellow ring since 1961, exploiting the weakness against yellow. The Red Lanterns are powered by rage and the blood of those killed; Orange rings are wielded solely by Larfleeze due to insatiable hunger; Yellow rings use fear; Blue rings need proximity to Green rings to function fully; Indigo members use staves instead of batteries; and Violet Star Sapphires utilize love.
